ArcEmu began as "OpenAscent" and was created on May 12th, 2008 by Trelorn. Burlex had shutdown Ascent, the community had no where to go.
While Burlex, Compboy and Trelorn worked on Summit Trelorn decided to create OpenAscent as a place for the community to continue working on Ascent. Soon after its creation Trelorn approached Hasbro asking him to take over the project as project manager.
Hasbro eventually accepted and the OpenAscent team began to move forward. Soon after, they decided that Trelorn was no good for the project and removed him. Little did we know it was Trelorn who was hosting the website & svn on a dedicated server provided by Peyton.
Trelorn wasn't to keen on the idea of us removing him even though it made sense - he was working on Summit & led OpenAscent, huh? - Anyways, after some drama related to him the team decided to move to OpenAscent.org. Soon after, we were attacked by Trelorn & Silent and decided to secure our own domain name & rename the project to ArcEmu.
With donations from the wonderful community we managed to buy an InvisionPowerBoard license as well as the domain name.
We grew fast with a few thousand members in the first few weeks they were truely great times, everyone was having fun, we were banning all the drama tards so there wasn't any drama, it was great. However, this period of grace didn't last for long. Trelorn & Silent got access to our forum's administration panel and wreaked havoc posting gay porn & destroying our entire forum. Soon after they managed to get svn commit access and deleted the entire working copy and posting their gay porn.
Sometime later, we regained control tightened security and moved forward. Trelorn was kicked out of the Summit project and leaked Summit to the community. He betrayed his friends, and the community.
"The glory days"
So things got better, we gained some amazing staff and began working on WOTLK - F&F Alpha. Sfera was a beast at reverse engineering, we actually pushed out the first F&F alpha emulator(see here) thanks to Sfera. Our glory days didn't last long. Soon members of our team started having real life issues, such as Sfera, Sunda etc and were not able to continue devleopment with us.
Lets fast forward a little..
"Now(8/10/09)"
We're working hard on fixing up the project making it more professional then ever! As you can see with our new website we put a lot of work into everything we release and hope that you, our user enjoy it all as much as we enjoy working on it! Recently we've created our #arcemu-dev channel in irc for users who are interested in developing with ArcEmu. This channel is a seperation from the #arcemu channel which is more of a general chat channel. We've also started to discuss major changes between each other on the staff forums allowing us a greater range of communication rather then just msn or irc discussions.
"Now(11/8/09)"
We've managed to do quite a bit of cleanup. The emulator has had a ton on memory leaks fixed, we've got our own scripting team (ArcScripts), the Lua engine is undergoing improvement, the Instance system is updated to WOTLK (3.2), Dual Specs are working as intended, vehicles are almost here!, phasing is working as intended, and the new website is almost complete (yay!).
"The Future"
Who knows what the future holds we can only wish for the best!
Hope this little history lesson on our project has been a good read!
