Thanks to blizzard, you can no longer use custom weapons's unless there item "ID" is already in the game/ DBC's. You would get an error saying "you need to equip a weapon".
Here's a guide on how to get over it and use custom item's;
1. Create the custom weapon.
2. Go to this link for a list of unused item id's that are already in the dbc's and use an item id listed in it.
http://pastebin.ca/1799396
3. Execute the custom weapon into your database and it should work correctly.

There is another way... although it is quite complex.
You have to edit your itemm.DBC file and add your custom weapon ids there. They can be any number you wish.
Then you must convert it into a MPQ file. Once you have done this the weapon is registered and can be used like a normal weapon. If you have other people playing on your server they must download your MPQ patch into their WoW folder.

editing the dbc file and replacing it over the existing one is illegal yes
but editing the original file and not replacing it but making a new patch is making through a loop hole in the laws
basically make a backup copy of the dbc file then edit the backup all you want to that way if it gets messed up theres no worries
