Hi i really didnt want to have to post this as i know its very noob, but im trying to start up my own server using elastichosts, they offer a free 5 day trial so i thought i would give it a go to see how well it would work, but unfortunatly im quite stuck.

im not completely noob on making an arcemu server as i have compiled some in the past on my windows pc and got them working, but i thought it was time to take it to the next step and host.

the problem im having is deciding which linux base to choose from, wether it be centOS 5.5 or ubuntu, im having problems with both as i am extremely new to linux, however iv been on it 5 hours strait, googling my ass off for all solutions possible, because no matter which i choose i cant even checkout the SVN.

CentOS: i cant get a desktop up and i dont understand why and/or if it can be done, i have tried multiple VNC viewers, but all i get is the console, i can install gnome but then again i cant access the program to checkout the SVN, so im basically looking for a way to see the server desktop.

Ubuntu: i can get a desktop installed but rabbitvcs wont install through the console and it wont install using a "package manager" on the desktop either, as it either says that "there is a file missing or that something else might be installed that makes it so rabbitvcs cant be installed" or something like that

Windows: i have no problems, only reason im not using windows is because the free trial doesnt include a windows server, only linux.

i would really appreciate any advice to do with the matter, and once again sorry for posting this here, but i didnt really know where to put it seems i was following the wiki instructions.

thanks!

the linux guide on our wiki ( http://www.arcemu.or...ompiling:_Linux ) provides all the infos required to set up ArcEmu on console-only linux distros (I set up ArcEmu on Ubuntu Server 10.04 with no issues following the wiki).
If you are looking for a desktop interface or any other GUI in a server version of a linux distro, then you should read some more documentation about what a server is ;)

thank you very much, and i agree, i was only looking to see if i could do it over a gui because i just wanted a quick cheap way of hosting it, thanks for the link, and i guess its time to learn linux

ok even following that guide i got errors following it directly from a fresh install on a virtual server...so im currently installing ubuntu server on my computer because im more of a hands on person, so im going to learn by having the operating system, and just incase i get overwhelmed iv got ubuntu desktop as a backup ;) but hey, overwhelmed is better than underwhelmed xD

thanks again SJA
